Why is Plant-based Food Becoming More Popular?
Plant-based diets have become prominent in recent years due to their incredible health benefits and the ethical and environmental reasons for following them. People are adapting their lifestyles to eat more vegan and vegetarian dishes as they are suitable for them and the planet.
A 2018 study by Roy Morgan Research revealed that nearly 2.5 million Australians now have vegetarian diets, which is 11.2% more than the research done in 2014. While the nationally representative survey of Australians in 2019 found that 35% of respondents were vegetarian or vegan for animal welfare, the second most popular response was for health reasons.
Considering all of this, let’s understand why vegetarian diets continue to increase in popularity.
Benefits of Plant-based Food
- Processed foods may also cause lots of environmental damage in their production and waste and can damage human health if eaten too often and in too large quantities. While plant-based diets can significantly impact our physical health, helping us feel fitter and supporting a properly functioning immune system and good heart health.
- Nutritionists and physicians often prescribe plant-based diets to patients with a family history of heart disease and cardiovascular conditions and to those who are obese, suffer from high blood pressure, or who would benefit from a low-sodium diet.
- This diet is more ethical in terms of animal welfare. With many problems in the industrial farming industry, including animal cruelty, many people choose to eat fewer animal foods to protest the outrageous harm that comes to animals for our food.
- A plant-based diet is considerably better for the environment than one high in dairy and meat. Since the dairy and meat sectors are major polluters affecting the environment and worsening the climate problem, more people are switching to a plant-based diet instead.
Finally, a plant-based diet can be incredibly flavourful with the addition of fresh herbs and spices and many different plant-based ingredients. Much evidence mentioned above suggests why vegetarianism is becoming a trend.
